City of Isfahan

Isfahan province with an area of almost 105937 square kilometers is located in the central part of Iran and is limited from north to central provinces, Qom and Semnan and from south to Fars and Kohgilooyeh-va-Boyer Ahmad provinces and from west to Khorasan and Yazd and from east to Lorestan and Chahar Mahal-o-Bakhtiari.

Isfahan City as the capital of the province, is the third most populous city in Iran after Tehran and Mashhad. According to the latest country subdivisions, the cities of Isfahan are as follows: Isfahan, Ardestan, Barkhar-o-Meymeh, Khomeini-Shahr, Khansar, Samiram, Shahreza, Fridon, Fereidoon Shahr, Flaverjan, Kashan, Golpaygan, Lanjan, Mobarakeh, Naeen, Najaf Abad and Natanz.

In 2006, Isfahan was chosen as Cultural Capital of Islamic World and in 2009, as Culture and Civilization Capital of Islamic Iran. This city is famous to its Islamic beautiful architecture and many beautiful boulevards, covered bridges, palaces, mosques and unique minarets. This has caused Isfahan, in Iranian Isfahani culture to be labeled as half of the world. Naghsh-e-Jahan is one of the largest squares in the world and is a prime example of Islamic architecture which has been registered as a World Heritage by UNSCO.

map-of-iran-shiraz Due to difference of heights in various regions, Isfahan province has three types of weather. “Very arid to warm arid weather”, “Semi humid to cold humid weather” and “semi-arid weather”. So this province is considered as “arid and semiarid regions” of the country. The north and west north parts of the province including cities of Kashan, Aran-o-Bidgol, Natanz, Ardestan, Naeen and Isfahan have non-cultivable, desert and sandy lands.

People of Isfahan province are composed of various ethnic groups that during the history and by rising of various governments in order to implementation of different economical, commercial and industrial activities has been entered to this land and inhabited there. Of course there are other groups that are living in this province who respectively of their population are: Persian Bakhtiari, Lors, Turks, Armenians, Georgians, Jews, Gypsies and Arabians. Also the Christians, Jews, Zoroastrian have formed dominant minorities of Isfahan population. Regarding the composition of ethnic groups in Isfahan province, people are speaking by accents of Isfahani, Naeeni, Natanzi, Khansari, Khouri, Kashani, Ardestani, Jandaghi, Gazi, Fridoni and Lori.

In the history books, Isfahan has been introduced as an army and defense base which by increasing of castles and forts its safety has been guaranteed for habitation and urbanization . There are several historical castles such as Atashgah Castle (Ghale-ye-Atashgah), Sarouyeh, Tabarrok, Kohan Dezh, Gard Dezh and … which confirm this notion. The establishment of Isfahan plain among the desert and Iran central arid mountains on the one hand and its importance and particular communicative situation in the center of Iran vast plateau on the other hand, has linked its history to antiquity of Iran.
